Ryo Kawasaki live

Club Night

The Garden Brewery

An amazing Japanese guitarist and a composer Ryo Kawasaki is coming with his band to Zagreb for the first time, at The Garden Brewery on Saturday December 15th.

Ryo  Kawasaki  has been one  of the pioneering  forces behind the development  of the fusion genre since the  late 1960s while collaborating, recorded  and toured with some of historical jazz legends  in Japan as well as in USA – Masahiko Sato, Hidehiko  Matsumoto, Yoshio Suzuki, Yousuke Yamashita, Kimiko Itoh  , Toshiko Akiyoshi, Gil Evans, Elvin Jones, Chico Hamilton,  Dave Liebman, Ted Curson, Cedar Walton. As a composer, Ryo has  written, recorded and published over 300 songs in his 50 years of  professional career for his own albums, films and jazz ballet as well  as some of his songs were recorded or sampled by the other artists.

He started as a professional jazz musician in Tokyo, Japan, where he worked with the most influential contemporaries, and was proclaimed one of the best Japanese jazz guitarists with only 24 years of age. He soon made a debut on the USA jazz scene where eh developed his fusion jazz rock sound, and hip-hop  and electronic music artists started sampling his beats. He helped develop the guitar synthesizer, experimented in House/Dance/Electronic music, using the MIDI sequencer program, and he influenced the new York club scene, performed live with bands and started his own label Satellites Records, he wrote music for the Estonial National Opera as well as ballet and the current phase sees him coming back to the jazz roots.

In  2016,  Kawasaki  has teamed  up with leading  Estonian bassist Kaarel  Liiv, keyb oardist Raun Juurikas  and drummer Eno Kollom returning to  his roots to focus on a fusion, funk,  soul and jazz-rock sound with this new group  Ryo Kawasaki & Level 8. The name represents his 8th stage  of different creative period in his career from Japan, USA  to Estonia. Ryo has completed recordings with this band for his  new album “Level 8” including twelve original songs penned by Ryo himself,  released in 2017 to celebrate his 70th birthday.

Joining him will be Phat Phil Cooper, a music collector who is definitely an authority in DJ-in with his 20 years long career.
