An amazing Japanese guitarist and a composer Ryo Kawasaki is coming with his band to Zagreb for the first time, at The Garden Brewery on Saturday December 15th.
Ryo Kawasaki has been one of the pioneering forces behind the development of the fusion genre since the late 1960s while collaborating, recorded and toured with some of historical jazz legends in Japan as well as in USA – Masahiko Sato, Hidehiko Matsumoto, Yoshio Suzuki, Yousuke Yamashita, Kimiko Itoh , Toshiko Akiyoshi, Gil Evans, Elvin Jones, Chico Hamilton, Dave Liebman, Ted Curson, Cedar Walton. As a composer, Ryo has written, recorded and published over 300 songs in his 50 years of professional career for his own albums, films and jazz ballet as well as some of his songs were recorded or sampled by the other artists.
He started as a professional jazz musician in Tokyo, Japan, where he worked with the most influential contemporaries, and was proclaimed one of the best Japanese jazz guitarists with only 24 years of age. He soon made a debut on the USA jazz scene where eh developed his fusion jazz rock sound, and hip-hop and electronic music artists started sampling his beats. He helped develop the guitar synthesizer, experimented in House/Dance/Electronic music, using the MIDI sequencer program, and he influenced the new York club scene, performed live with bands and started his own label Satellites Records, he wrote music for the Estonial National Opera as well as ballet and the current phase sees him coming back to the jazz roots.
In 2016, Kawasaki has teamed up with leading Estonian bassist Kaarel Liiv, keyb oardist Raun Juurikas and drummer Eno Kollom returning to his roots to focus on a fusion, funk, soul and jazz-rock sound with this new group Ryo Kawasaki & Level 8. The name represents his 8th stage of different creative period in his career from Japan, USA to Estonia. Ryo has completed recordings with this band for his new album “Level 8” including twelve original songs penned by Ryo himself, released in 2017 to celebrate his 70th birthday.
Joining him will be Phat Phil Cooper, a music collector who is definitely an authority in DJ-in with his 20 years long career. Owner of NuNorthern Soul Records that present soul, jazz, hip-hop, disco i funk, The Garden Brewery will see his best collection. Nick & Pepi will round up the day, the duo behind Adriatic Coasting radio show and club night for feel good music, that just started an agency to promote local and international talent.
